Pages, Stans, and Like For Sale: How Korean pop and social media are figuring in Halalan (Elections)
2022
This online project is unique, with Manabat conducting a social media experiment to expose tactics used by some presidential and senatorial candidates outside COMELEC’s regulating powers. She ‘bought’ a KPop fan page with 12,000 likes for P1,200 and repurposed it to pose as a councilor candidate in Baguio City, uncovering websites that sell likes and followers.
Manabat contacted Meta, which began purging Facebook pages renamed for political use. Meta highlighted that while selling pages is allowed, using them deceitfully violates guidelines. After two weeks and following Meta’s actions, Manabat deactivated the page, revealing the unethical practices of some politicians.
Jacque Manabat’s TikTok is a beacon for authentic information seekers. Beyond disseminating facts, Jacque aims to empower Filipinos with indispensable knowledge, particularly in transportation and digital literacy. Amidst the challenges of the pandemic, she boldly embraced TikTok as a platform for news delivery, revolutionizing digital storytelling in Southeast Asia.
